Bringing Broadway to New Mexico Students
In a groundbreaking effort to make theater accessible for all, over 1,600 students from New Mexico gathered at Popejoy Hall for the Broadway for Teens event on December 11. This year’s focus was on MJ The Musical, part of an outreach initiative designed to introduce high school pupils to the vibrant world of musical theater.
The Origin of Broadway for Teens
Launched in 2023 alongside the hit musical Hamilton, the Broadway for Teens program started with just two participating schools. Its director, Fabianna Borghese Tabeling, emphasized that the initial success led to rapid growth and increasing interest, allowing more students to experience live performances.
Community Support and Corporate Sponsorships
The expansion of this initiative is supported entirely by donations, with Chevron stepping in to sponsor this year's event. Patrick Killen, Chevron's senior manager for New Mexico State Government Affairs, expressed pride in supporting local arts and education. This partnership reflects a commitment to nurture community connections while enriching students' educational experiences.
Open Doors to Future Opportunities
On the day of the event, University of New Mexico President Garnett Stokes addressed the students, inspiring them to envision their future in higher education. The combination of witnessing a Broadway-level show and engaging with university presence opens doors while reinforcing the importance of creative and educational pursuits.
Conclusion: A Step Toward Greater Accessibility
Popejoy Hall’s initiative represents a critical step in expanding access to the performing arts for young New Mexicans. By breaking down financial barriers and fostering community partnerships, the program not only enriches student experience but also nurtures future generations of theater lovers and performers. As this initiative continues to grow, it highlights the undeniable value of arts education and community engagement.
