In a significant move to safeguard its natural heritage, New Mexico has announced a groundbreaking investment of $930,000 aimed at protecting 6,000 acres at Ghost Ranch. This area is famed for inspiring some of Georgia O’Keeffe's most renowned works. The project is now recognized as the largest initiative funded through the Natural Heritage Conservation Act (NHCA) since its revival via the Land of Enchantment Legacy Fund.

Located 65 miles northwest of Santa Fe, Ghost Ranch has long been a sanctuary for artists and nature lovers alike. It offers breathtaking views, notably of Cerro Pedernal, a flat-topped mountain featured in many of O’Keeffe's paintings. This conservation plan is the result of a collaborative effort between the State of New Mexico, the New Mexico Land Conservancy (NMLC), the Presbyterian Church Foundation, and the National Ghost Ranch Foundation. The first phase encompasses 4,225 acres of grasslands and significant shoreline along Abiquiú Lake while excluding facilities like the visitor center. The second phase will secure an additional 1,560 acres, including areas surrounding O’Keeffe's former residence.
